I know Penrith have a champion team that never give up, but they looked dead and buried with 20 minutes left. There just didn’t seem to be too much happening. Brisbane seemed to have their measure in defence and in attack, Brisbane were really testing the edges for much of that game. But it goes to show what momentum does, especially on such a warm, energy-sapping evening. The try on half-time propelled Brisbane into the second half, and it took one moment of Cleary breaking through to start the comeback for Penrith.

Not sure why Laui is on there…. The team improved dramatically when Cogger come on to allow Cleary to be the dominant ball player away from the ruck
Luai was clearly playing injured. In normal circumstances, he would still be recovering from his shoulder injury. Tago wouldn’t have 100% recovered from his pec injury, either.
And while we’re at it, it felt like even Cleary didn’t have much of an impact until the last 20 minutes. If anything, Mam targeted him early in the second half and got two of his three tries out of it. But that last 20 minutes has to be up there with some of the best 20 minutes anyone has played at a Grand Final in the NRL era. I just don’t think its quite the GOAT overall performance many commentators are claiming.
The last 20 minutes was as good as 20 minutes as you’ll see a player put together… the previous 20 was poor (his long kick was a horrendous error and then he was clearly targeted by Mamm in the defensive line.

I don’t think it will be that bad, actually. Even though I would pick Edwards over Tedesco pretty much any day, they are different types of players. Tedesco is more of a ball player and if that fits into Meninga’s tactics, then a ball player needs to be picked at full-back. Edwards may not be organising the defence or his own full-back positioning from the wing, but he can still use everything else in his game.
Man, even by NRL standards those Burgess brothers appear to be a very special breed of white trash.
