The year is 2041, Britain has held it’s 28th Election and delayed Brexit until the first month of 2042…

There’s a real danger of their broken electoral system returning control to Boris because the anti-psycho vote will be split between Lib Dem and Labour. You’d think Boris is promising enough crazy to prevent the loss of his vote to the Brexit Party.

All that said, good lord it would be fun to see all Boris’s transparent machinations ending with a 100% failure rate in parliament and losing government.

Britain is used to operating in a first past the post system and so there is a long history of tactical voting, particularly on the anti-Tory side.

Well they’re not doing a great job at it given they lost two of the last three elections with a majority of the popular vote.

And now possible the biggest FU to Borris with parliament voting to prevent a no-deal exit and then voting to prevent a general election.

EU must be pissing themselves laughing, especially with Borris claiming he needs the threat of a no-deal exit to negotiate a better agreement, it’s almost as though he literally can’t understand that a no-deal exit fucks over GB more than it’ll fuck over EU by a significant margin.

That’s not true. I just think he doesn’t care. He’ll be fine, well off, continue to go where he wants, get the best medical treatment, eat the finest food, and do what he wants and life will be great no matter what clusterfuck they manage to engineer. His only concern is the game, as it is for a lot of the people with the reins here.

Don’t Rees-Mogg and co own companies which stand to make squillions from Brexit?

Not quite, the EU is bringing in rules to address taxation of companies who are registered in tax havens, forcing them to pay tax on profits realized within the EU regardless of where the company is registered.

Rees-Mogg is the primary owner of a business registered in the Caymen Islands which would find itself paying tax on 100’s of millions of pounds of profits, numerous other Tory / Brexit supporters are in the same boat.

Congratulations, now you know the real reason for Brexit, rich cunts who don’t want to pay their fair share, lying through their teeth to ram through an exit at any cost to the country for their own personal gain.

Will Scotland end up leaving the UK, or is it more a case of wishful thinking?

They would need approval from Westminster for another referendum and the Tories and Labour have ruled that out in the first term of government.

There is always a possibility of rebellion…

That’s the preferable route, but the theory that Scotland doesn’t need permission to have another referendum is logical. The Scottish Parliament doesn’t need permission for a non-binding referendum, only for a binding one, but as we’ve just seen, constitutionally even a non-binding referendum is viewed as an instruction to the government.

If Scotland were to have another vote, formal or otherwise, it would almost certainly be to exit the union, the logic used by the Westminster government to try to ram through a terrible EU exit with no plan, would also demand that they honour the will of the Scottish people.

I guess the issue there is that such a vote would be instructive to the Scottish Parliament but not necessarily to the British Parliament as they have not sanctioned the vote nor acknowledged it as a legitimate directive. I’m not sure how Scotland could do this without British permission.

Well no, authority to conduct a non-binding referendum is legitimately devolved to the Scottish parliament, by Westminster. If the Scottish Parliament chooses to do so, it’s a legitimate referendum and, logically, binding on the Westminster parliament since they devolved the authority to the Scottish Parliament.

No doubt the English would find excuses to attempt to de-legitimise it, but if they failed to honour it, the next obvious step is revolt against a tyrannical government.

They will ban kilts and bagpipes soon after.

Wouldn’t be the first time.

We’ll have our shein trews though

So now that the Conservatives have a minority government either way, and are eager for an election which they expect to win, surely they’re not beholden to DUP at all and can go back to the obvious solution of making NI a special economic zone?

Given how little thought Brexit campaigners gave to the Ireland issue since day one, I can’t imagine that many on the hard right from Great Britain feel all that strongly about “Northern Ireland must be treated the exact same”.

This is a good read:

Can Boris call a Double Dissolution election now that he’s had the same bill defeated twice?

There’s no such thing as a double dissolution in the UK, there’s only one elected house, and no, he needs a 2/3 majority to call a general election. He has no ability to call an election without the assent of parliament.
