The travelling circus: stadia discussion

Thanks.

That sounds like a Mayor who knows they’re into a good thing and wants more games to be played there to me.

Revenue …
If only you could keep 100% of Revenue things would be rosy…
Oh wait - there are costs involved in running a stadium…

You can see them all here
https://www.scgt.nsw.gov.au/about-us/policies-and-documents/annual-reports/

In fact in 2017/18 they lost $1.7m on total revenue of $99.5m on the operational budget.

And are already carrying debt of $78m

First time we’ve actually broken a fence (sfs & newy are designed to fall when there is excess weight on them), a couple of the post snapped in half, and another couple bent in two :joy:

You could count the number of 45k crowds per annum at the SFS on one hand… if not one finger. Personally i think the occasional sellout is a great thing. Creates more of a buzz with the public and the smaller venue creates a much better atmosphere on your average 12,000-15,000 crowd matchday. Stadium should be no more than 38-40k inclusive of stadium member seats.

The extra (say) $200 million cost in building 45k instead of 35k needs to be justified by those 2-5 times each year where a crowd over that lower number will attend.
Perhaps concerts add more than that - is it the case that there have been more 35k+ attendances for concerts each year than for sport?

From my understanding, concerts are the biggest money maker for stadiums these days. The SFS included. Which is why a 30k stadium is never going to be an option.

They can justify charging a shit load for one off concerts when compared to regular tenants. Throw in the fact that they rarely fix the pitch post concert and alcohol/food sales are massive in comparison…

Well, yeah? That’s why I immediately followed that by enumerating several ways that the new stadium would have to improve new revenues to cover the loan repayment?

The point was that it makes no sense, particularly for a not-for-profit body like SCGT, to use to use “operating surplus” as a point of reference for the scale of the loan. The direct comment I was responding to claimed “need to increase their profits x10”.

A few ‘bad’ years like 2017-18 might knock the average operating surplus into the hundreds-of-thousands, what then - they’d “need to increase their profits x100”? What if the average dropped to a net of 0 (the ideal long-run average for a non-profit) “need to increase their profits x∞”? Does that make any sense?

No. In each of those, despite the orders of magnitude difference in ‘surplus’ terms, the operating budget (in ~2019 dollars) is ~$100m/year, and adding a loan repayment of ~$20m means that they need to raise revenues by ~20%.

except i indicated that it was an increase of profits by x10 rather than talking about operating budgets. Obviously if they made 0 I would then indicate they would need to increase by x amount rather than use a multiplication.

In any case, the few bad years would indicate a default on their loan repayments and what happens then? Government says “all good, make it up to us later”? You’re also ignoring the fact that a state of the art stadium comes with increased operating costs

Pitch condition has improved and looks fine for Wednesday:

If the intention is to stage more concerts in the new venue then a roll in/out playing surface should be a mandatory requirement.

why would they though? Only SFC is affected due to most concerts being in summer and the SCG Trust has long shown they rarely care about us

How about other events like Motor Cross, Boxing, X Games and maybe even Basketball (2 NBA teams).
It needs to be a multi-purpose rectangular stadium and a roll in/out pitch increases the options while reducing the costs associated with repairing the surface after each event.

All those already have decent venues that are more suited. Remember are roll in/out pitch requires a shit load of space, time, energy and technology that costs even more money.

In any case, basketball is generally indoors and it’s already got stadiums that suit their requirements. Boxing doesn’t need a specific stadium/floor. The Horne fight was in Suncorp and there wasn’t any major issues, they just built the boxing ring on the grass and charged huge for seats on the grass.

Motor Cross and X Games are the only potential ones but even then, don’t see the trust being interested. X Games could potentially use and Motor Cross would be a tough one. My understanding that Motor Cross takes a while to set up, would there be an extended period of time SFS isn’t used to allow for this?

Probably not strictly motorcross, but they had this at Spotless a few weeks back - Australia - You Got This - 2019 | Nitro Circus

The whole “we need 45k for outdoor concerts” line is BS. Hindmarsh regularly hosts big outdoor concerts like Foo Fighters etc and thats a tiny stadium in comparison.

Outdoor events like Nitro Circus etc are better suited to ANZ and Spotless anyway.

Also, remember that at concerts, the pitch is full of concert goers, not just the stands (albeit, sometimes losing some seating behind the stage, depending on the configuration), but overall, a 35k seater stadium for a concert will fit a lot more than 35k. (Allianz, which holds 45k had 51k at coldplay).

Some stadiums make accommodation for concerts by designing some part of the stands to convert to a stage so as to not damage the playing surface to the same extent as placing the stage on the pitch.
