The SES doing a clever meme:
Some eventful weather just happened out my way
Crazy loud thunderclaps overnight
Got the heavy thunder right over us last night. Shocked my daughter didnt wake up. Think we got a bit of hail too which rare as hell in West Ryde
Lismore again
God help them
The SES canāt
The rain there last night was crazy, we were up there overnight.
It woke me up, said shit thatās crazy heavy, it got even heavier.
Itās so wet up there already
Evacuation warnings again. Fuck me.
You should have seen it for the first flood, it was much heavier and didnāt stop for 2 days.
Itās not looking good but there have been some breaks in the rain that didnāt occur with the first 2 this year. There were forecasts of 300mm+ for the 24 hours today into tomorrow but it looks as though we may escape that although 200mm will still result in some flooding. The heaviest of the falls are expected overnight and there is quite a lot of rain sitting just of the coast though.
In fairness to the emergency services theyāve given plenty of early warning for this one. The BOM put out a Major Flood warning at 10.45am this morning and the Wilson had barely even moved. Prepare to evacuate orders are in place and businesses have already packed up. It may be over cautious but it is clear that lessons were learned although it is concerning that the next flood advice isnāt due until 9.30 tomorrow morning when the last one was issued at 4.30pm today.
The other difference this time is that the main wave of flood water, if it hits, will occur during the day so any unforeseen rises wonāt occur in the early hours of the morning when people are asleep.
Looking at the current tendencies of the upstream tributaries, the intensity of the rain and the breaks between falls, I donāt think the levee will be breached this time. Major flooding is definitely possible but I canāt see it getting to 10.6m at this stage. Hopefully.
Good luck, fella.
Yeah good luck mate
That rain last night was crazy.
I hope itās not that bad again.
Good luck.
Thanks for the well wishes but I must point out that I am no longer living or working in Lismore, Iām about 40 minutes further inland, so I wasnāt ever going to be directly impacted or affected. Obviously that doesnāt mean that I donāt know anyone who would have been in that position though.
Itās absolutely shit mentally though. Even though Iām now living out of the flood zone events like this create anxiety and bring everything from February and March back to the front of your mind.
We were staying with family near Wollongbar and Iām glad they live up so high.
We are supposed to have storms this afternoon and thereās more flood warnings around.
Good times.
This is a road just around the corner from my house. That isnāt a river but a creek that I used to jump across when I was running. You can see up ahead where it crosses over the road now.
Wollongbar/Alstonville always get a heap of rain being on top of the plateau. Pretty much all of it drains towards Ballina and out into the ocean rather than inland towards the Wilson though. They had 250mm up there yesterday.
The dangerous weather is when that rain falls up around Nimbin, Terania, Dunoon and Corndale ways. That all funnels into the Wilson and, due to the topography, the rain can be very intense and outside of detection zones. There were reports of 600mm+ in 24hrs coming from those areas in the first flood.
That photo perfectly sums up the problems people are still facing in many flood affected areas. A road like that being out of action can add an hour to a journey. Thereās many roads here that they canāt even begin to repair because the land is still slipping due to it being saturated.
Thereās one road, Naughtons Gap, that is still awaiting repair from the 2017 flood!
Wow that takes some big balls
RUN FOR YOUR LIIIIIVVES!!!
They do travel in pairs
