I think it might be an app thing. My internet connection is 100Mb/s down with low latency and I don’t have any issues whatsoever with other streaming services.

I have the same issue with Paramount. Optus is fine for me though, both through Google chrome cast.
There’s definitely something up with the frame rate, but its a pretty low quality presentation overall - picture quality wise. Different TVs handle motion and frame rates differently so people are going to experience it differently.
For example, I suspect that people with funky ball disappearing shenanigans are also having frame rate issues, but the motion smoothing on their tvs is doing its best to cover it up.
Would be nice if the stream was high quality enough that we didn’t need much processing on our end… But there’s fuck all chance of that happening any time soon. No streaming service I’ve ever seen has gotten really good quality out of their internet sports streaming. Even Kayo is only kind of OK. Paramount+ haven’t really done much to give me hope they’re the ones to crack to code…
Frustrating that its 2021 and telecast quality of football in Australia has really gone backwards from circa 2014 levels. Let alone the inevitable service outages that happen every World Cup or other major event…
Fuck the internet, is what I’m saying.
It is a little strange because the issues with the stream varies from match to match.
The Victory v Brisbane game that was horrific for us on Sunday (worst stream yet) actually looked mint on last nights highlights show on 10 Bold. Our NBN connection is always lightning so definitely seems to be some inconsistencies with the broadcast.
I streamed off my laptop with an HDMI cable and almost switched the tv off multiple times
I have heard that the Paramount + app is just a reskinned version of the 10 All Access app that existed before Paramount stepped in. Streaming the game on the 10play app I also had framerate issues.
Apparently there’s way more functionality on the US version of the Paramount app so hopefully they end up rolling out something better over here, as the app is pretty rubbish as is.
The framerate for the Wanderers game on Sunday was dramatically improved. For all the issues they’re having at this stage, it does seem like they’re trying to address them.
The one thing they are NOT doing is systematically capturing details of issues so they can properly track down root causes. They’re using anecdotes and issuing platitudes. I have very little hope they’ll get to the bottom of the issues quickly.
Has anyone been actually able to measure the frame rate.
Eg. Are they using 30 when most Aussie TVs would be set to 25 which most TVs would fix by dropping frames?
Broadcast TV is 25 frames (PAL standard) but the TV’s themselves aren’t limited to that frame rate. So if you’re using an app or internet service the frame rate will be governed by that.
Edit: Sorry should have specified that the stream is most likely PAL standard anyway.
How do you know this? Unless you work for them I don’t think you can know for sure. I would think they have an issues log and prioritising it in the background working out effort/cost/time etc of the various problems people have raised. I mean they’re not going to post much detail on on Twitter, all you can expect are short platitudes publicly but no-one would really know what’s going on behind the scenes.
What toffe mentioned above is interesting. If they had to go live on the existing platform(s) with a long term plan of moving over to whatever the viacomcbs systems are they might be running on interim or legacy systems that they’re reticent to put to much work into.
Or they just didn’t have the resources or time to get everything done in the time frame they were given (by far the most likely scenario in my opinion). The proliferation of platforms really causes issues for these OTT services and makes it almost impossible to test every platform and version they are publishing through.
Because there is no public facing form to capture 7-layer data required to analyse root cause.
You can’t call them, you can’t raise a ticket, you can only fill in a form which lets you vaguely categorise your issue and only asks what o/s you’re running, which at best gives you layer 5/6/7 information.
So yes, I DO know that they are not capturing enough data to do any kind of detailed analysis which, given the shit state of internet access in Oz and the vast variety of delivery mechanisms once it hits the home, is basically gambling that it’ll always be an app/front-end issue.
Having an issues log isn’t the same as having a useable data set to correlate patterns of issues across transport mechanisms, or protocols, service providers, hardware platforms, etc etc etc.
I help very big organisations create functional problem management solutions, I know what a working one looks like, asking which app you’re using is looking through the keyhole, they need to open the door.
I think almost everyone is experience frame rate issues and no-one can pause/rewind. I get the feeling Paramount know what the problems are already and have done their own testing. The issues are experienced so broadly there’s not even a point asking about devices etc.
When they fix all the basic stuff affecting everyone that’s probably when they can give you a call and start working on specifics…
Completely disagree, rewind is a feature, not a bug, and has no place in this conversation, frame-rate experiences vary enormously by individual, some people never get frame rate issues (me, for instance), there are resolution issues, ghosting, interpolation, decoding and stream and app stability issues, the idea that they’re all caused by common, core issues across literally thousands of variations in how and on what people are getting their streams is wishful thinking.
The fact is that they cannot and do not know what is causing the range of issues that people face because they are not gathering the right data. Your assumptions are exactly what they are doing, assuming its a core issue that they can somehow solve.
I agree on the pause/rewind being a feature not a bug, but I only bring it up because they’ll have limited resources to work with to fix/improve. My observations from reading forums and anecdotal evidence is that everyone seems to have frame rate issues on the same games which honestly I also suspect is not a bug but just that they’re using shittier infrastructure or whatever for some games and not cheaping out on others e.g. the Matildas game now looks absolutely perfect and it’s because they’ve used their best cameras and equipment. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the bigger games look good and the smaller games/games outside of NSW have issues in quality/frame rate. You know more than I do but I get the feeling they basically know all their problems already and people raising them just lets them know what to prioritise.
Well, no, there are a huge number of variables, it’s not a fixed ‘volume’ of infrastructure, camera equipment is almost irrelevant, they’re standards driven, the problems are a lot more complex than ‘using cheaper cameras’ otherwise issues would be universal, when those devices were in use, and they are very clearly not.
I have very limited knowledge on TV technology, and frame rates. But would that explain why on Blue Bloods, after about 3 episodes the sound and the images aren’t linking up. There’s a good lag of about 2-3 seconds.
Theres all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff that could cause that kind of issue mate. From the encoding through to the player involved.
