Don’t underestimate cost of living as well - It is expensive to take kids to the football for a lot of people.
It can be expensive just taking yourself to the football!!!

The decline in averages coincides with COVID but also the introduction of Western and Macarthur who average zero attendance and would pull down the league average a fair bit. As (If?) those teams mature you’d expect them to contribute quite a bit of growth.
Yeah, would be curious to see what impact removing them from the stats has on the average… I cannot think of a game that either have been involved in that have generated a blockbuster crowd
While I can’t see anyone who has done that analysis alone, here’s the average per club:

One of the big issues is Melbourne crowds dropping substantially from pre-Covid, I imagine a combination of cost of living, Covid breaking traditions, and the riot turning a lot of people away.
Melbournians - nay Victorians as a collective have become a lot more unhinged since COVID. Lockdown broke them. Literally,
The riot wouldn’t have helped. But Victorians can’t generally be helped.
City average more than 8k? Get outta here. Are they counting seagulls?
The derbies would probably pump that up significantly higher
Yah I haven’t checked number but 20k plus changes the average a fair bit if they’re normally at least 6k anyway
Reported to be a $200 mil deal for the Matildas broadcast rights for four more years with network 10. Rumours of their demise, etc etc
True, its not like network ten have ever backed a losing horse
Not just Matildas. From what I saw the other day it was basically all national team games.
So I’m guessing well hoping at least some of this trickles down to the clubs?
Wouldn’t think so?
Isn’t that what unbundling the league was all about?
It might trickle down to the NSD…
I don’t see why it would. The APL and A-Leagues are separate to the FA now.
Yeah that was a stupid decision in hindsight. Still if they want the clubs to provide players for them they are going to need a strong domestic league
NSD looking a bit better now
They could do worse than bring down the fees for kids playing on the weekend and/or lobby government at all levels to increase the number of football fields.
That’s where our massive grassroots player base counts against us, any subsidy by the FA doesn’t go far, not like the AFL or NRL
it also works in the opposite direction though, with so many players paying rego fees, you would expect the total costs would be cheaper the more players there are, with some pretty capped costs in terms of facilities etc.
In theory, increasing players should only really massively increase the running of the game as well as facilities. One football field, should realistically be able to accommodate about 10 games over the weekend, so that would account for about 200 players over an entire weekend worth of football.
