TV Ratings and Revenue

$2 a week for the aleague, and the usual idiots with Liverpool/Utd club badges as profile pics complaining that Australian football is dead and they/no-one will pay for it.

FOAD cunts.

Great article. And great announcement.
It’s time to shift gears. Let’s hope actually marketing the league can make a difference!

Fantastic news, shepherded home (but without any sign of obstruction) by the best CEO in Australian football, DT, working under the best owner and Chair in the League, Traktor and Scott, heading the best football club in Australia - you know who!

It is a great deal in the circumstances in that:

  1. It is much higher ($200m including contra for 5 years with 3 year option) and more secure than that which Rugby Australia got for its all-of-game deal (including test matches) with Nine/Stan ($100m including contra for 3 years with 2 year option). That means the market is saying that A League and W league are more valuable than Super Rugby, Women’s Rugby and Rugby test matches combined plus other stuff, despite Nine Media’s deep emotional bonds for rugger.
  2. Part of the deal is FA developing its own in-house production capabilities which should, if managed well (thank you DT!) provide the A League with greater leverage over what is produced and at what quality.
  3. Contra is immensely important; e.g. Stan/9/ARU have lots of advertising on Sydney’s bus stops and buses. This is really noticeable and raises awareness. We need to have these spaces covered with photos of NINKO on Ten !! We won’t be getting the print media to cross-promote us as AFL/NRL/ARU can with their rights holders BUT we can get enough mainstream public exposure to partially compensate (and get into the public consciousness) or to provoke eg daily press to respond to the new level of public consciousness.
  4. There is plenty of good financial room for FA to sell Socceroo and Matildas’ rights for a good sum, particularly with World Cups coming up including the home women’s one in 2023.
  5. There is still FA Cup rights to come which could go somewhere useful or APL could use its new in-house production capabilities to present it.
  6. Ten/Viacom holding some stake in APL, as long as it is a small minority one, should be fantastic. They will have a number of skins in the game - apart from ratings/advertising revenue for FTA and Paramount streaming subscriptions. Over five years and more, there is real incentive and opportunity to plan more comprehensively for the game’s growth. They have people who know how to market, how to position the ‘product’ and use new forms of attachment to interested people. As well, a big cash infusion into the A League should shore up club finances beyond the rights money they will receive and allow them to do all things better - including health and fitness, youth academies and women’s teams and academies where these do not already exist.

And we may start to see a move to fund eg a proper second division and/or reductions in registration fees for the kids playing.

Now that the APL will be producing the matches in-house, I wonder if we can make money selling the matches overseas as well?

It’s already started; I was at my Mum’s house and Channel 10 was on and there was a huge segment on the deal in their sports coverage and on The Project they were interviewing Zullo and a Matilda on the new deal.

Not watching our ACL campaign?

How did that all go? It’s always awkward when they’re being interviewed by someone who doesn’t give a fuck.

I love that he was essentially able to take the piss out of Gallop in his spare time.

What an article. So much positivity there. The fact that 10/Paramount are considering Football as their number one sport and are also looking to expand their football coverage (details are unclear, but might include any of the European rights and national team rights) is unprecedented. This deal really does sound like it’s the best fit, despite contributing to a more fragmented sporting market. The key is that there will be games on a primary FTA channel that will be marketed properly, and if anyone has any additional interest, they can sign up for under $10 a month to view all games (need to confirm whether sport would be an add-on I guess). I mean, to put it into context, I used to pay around $90 a month at one point to have access to the A-League games.

I think it helps that Beverley McGarvey isn’t really of that old boys club which have tended to keep the doors closed against our sport.

It looked alright and it seemed like they gave a fark (Waleed is a football fan).

So I just watched it (on 10 Play!). Seemed to be enough interest, although the banner referred to it as “Soccer”. That will be one of the interesting hurdles.

I think the best moment though was when Jenna McCormick (Melbourne City W-League player) was asked why she switched from AFL to football and she said (to paraphrase) that ultimately the best thing you can do as a sports person is to represent your country, and football offers that opportunity on the biggest stage. So good.

Seeing the details can see why Paramout/10 was chosen. Looks promising hope it works.

Cant wait for the first A-League advert mid-bachelor “If you love this drama tune in for even bigger drama- Saturday 7:30 The Big Blue”

If you think Travis is sexy, wait to you see Milos in action

I love how people on socials are complaining about having to pay $9 a month for a new streaming platform to watch the A League. “I watch the A League and NRL, $9 is too much to just watch the A-League”. Perhaps you should look at it the other way around: $25 is too much to only watch NRL.

It’s a pretty valid argument to tell you the truth. The number of streaming services is starting to get ridiculous. Pretty soon, to get the same content as Fox used to have, we’ll be paying for 10 or so streaming services.

Although I’ll definitely get rid of Foxtel and most likely Netflix which I rarely watch these days. I’ll probably just end up with Paramount and FTA. Can only watch so much TV. Can always hook Netflix back up if I’m struggling for crap to watch. The cost is pretty negligible

Sorry just remembered I also get Optus but it’s included in my mobile plan so no extra cost for that, at least up front

NEWS: Paramount+ is ramping up its ever-expanding soccer coverage with a deal with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Formal announcement and further details coming shortly.

Would love if they also picked up leagues like. The J League and MLS
