That’s right. The ground used to play chart songs over the tannoy before games. Liverpool “Merseybeat” group Gerry and the Pacemakers, recorded a cover of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in 1963. As this song was slower than most of the pop songs played, it allowed the Kop to sing along and the rest is history.
There was a really good book about the Kop I read a few years back that goes through the whole history of Liverpool and their supporters. Back to YNWA though, it’s pretty much as organic as you can get and it’s now pretty much one of the most famous football songs in the world.
Here’s an old BBC story about the Kop where the crowd sings along to the Beatles and Cilla Black (both from Liverpool) in exactly the same way. Fun to see the old crowd which was a heaving, surging organic mass. Good fun if you put up with the possibility of someone pissing down your leg.
Those are existing songs that were adopted by fans (mostly). I’m talking about songs that were written specifically for the club. The lyrics are usually a bit awkward and forced.
We’ve already got an organic club song, it’s Tsunami. In 50 years time the Cove will still be singing the drop every time we score and people will be telling their children about this bizarre era in music.
Sutherland Sharks FC are proud to announce the appointment of Christopher Naumoff as our U18’s coach for the 2020 season.
Chris was a junior at the club many years ago before being picked up by the A-League side Sydney FC. Chris has plied his coaching trade over the last few years and came back to the club last year to assist with 1st Grade. The club is happy to see him take on the role at the club!
I’m happy to see Kiki landing on his feet after a really rough period for him.
Watched kofi run around for Canberra Olympic this arvo. Still lightning quick and a decent cross, didn’t help though as they lost their semi 1-0 to Cooma tigers.
