Women’s Asian Cup 2022 - Special Lockdown Edition

I suspect they will get another opportunity against the Phillippines. It will also be a more logical time to rest some of the players that will play the full game tonight.

I’m just happy that Carpenter has been on the scoresheet a couple of times. Nice for her to get the rewards she deserves.

That wasn’t a bad finish from Luik.

Shame that Philippines goal was ruled out. Would’ve been one of the goals of the tournament.

Been decent to watch, both sides about 27 rungs higher up the food chain than Indonesia.

It would be great to see Philippines get a point or three here, but they look really tired. They’ve been very impressive up to this point, though.

I guess that’s why they kept trying those ridiculous shots from distance :joy: :joy: :joy:

Congrats to Philippines! Really deserved it, in my opinion. Worked really hard, look fit and well-organised. We better be ready for a match on Monday.

Absolute howler from the keeper contriving to lay an egg there, but Philippines were good value for the win from what I saw. Huge result, they should do Indonesia in a canter to go through in 2nd place, Staj is a magician.

Does anyone think it is a bit disrespectful to keep going for goals when we are like 10 nil up or something like that. I mean the game is won, why rub the opponent’s face in it?

On the other hand, it might be disrespectful to not give our best performance ?

When we played baseball as kids, if one team was up by 7 runs at a certain point in the game it would get the mercy rule.
Both coaches would agree to finish early.

I would ordinarily agree but in this sort of situation where goal difference could conceivably make a difference for qualification (i.e if we stuff up against say Philippines) then keep the foot down. Just doing it once for that purpose would be fine though.

This is the tournament proper ja?

Not quali?

I mean for the knock out rounds

I hear what you’re saying, though the Matildas didn’t really celebrate any goals other than the Luik goal, which I could understand. I remember the US WNT got stick in the last World Cup by celebrating each of their 13 goals against Thailand like it was the final.

That’s right, but half the teams in qualifying withdrew because of covid so most teams got in only playing two games.

I dont know?

Im just asking if this is qualifying for the tournament or the tournament and that’s a heavy fucking scoreline for a tourney game and I teally dont pay enough attention to know without asking.

Yes, this is the group stage for the 2022 Women’s Asian Cup.

It’s weaker than usual due to some nations pulling out because of COVID.

Just back to the players Tony picked and the subs he made last night, he’s obviously gonna have to rotate at some point when they’re playing every 3 or 4 days, but I wonder if Staj doing in the Thai’s has actually played into our hands?

Tony could pick his stongest XI again in the next game against Philippines, and then rest them all and put out a ‘B’ team in what should now be a dead rubber against Thailand in the 3rd and final group game. Give all the first teamers a rest before knockout rounds, and all the fringe players a run closer to when they may be needed (pending any injuries or suspensions at the business end).

They need to be a bit careful, though. In the last Asian Cup, Thailand were only a couple of minutes away from knocking us out in 2018. Hopefully Tony has got them sufficiently prepared so that we can breeze through, as we probably should do.
