Adelaide United Thread

Shouldn’t be a big deal but i guess it is (sadly). Brave move. Big love and respect.

FFA Cup final douchebag having a big fat wankers cry as we speak…

Agree with the above comments.
What is it with society that sees people happily cheering on the Matilda’s last night yet will vilify this poor guy when Adelaide play? Why do we take our gay female athletes to heart yet the gay males are still shunned?

I’m going to say because gay female athletes are viewed as more masculine therefore good.
Gay male athletes are more feminine and bad.

Just one thought.

Hard to put yourself in the headspace of such a fucking neanderthal, but hopefully this will lead to some self-awareness as you’d think it less likely those types will throw the same slurs at their own players.

FMD he is the ONLY active footballer who is openly gay according to Optus. Technically not correct (Brennan) but still. Shocking stat.

But we don’t count all the gay women footballers ja?

Agreed, just hoping for some day down the line when players don’t need to come out in public as a statement. When everyone can get to the “so what? whatever” stage of acceptance of homosexuality, we’ll be in a good place.

Always makes me think of some older people I know who get so frustrated when they see stories like this. It’s always the same “Why do we have to see this? I don’t give a shit. I don’t care about his/her orientation.”

Every time I try to tell them, that’s a good thing they think that, the problem is that far too many people don’t think like that. Too many people DO give a shit in the negative direction. Eventually we will get to a stage where it doesn’t have to be news, but that’s a ways down the line.

Proud of him, wish him all the best for this.

I actually think it’s due to porn unfortunately

Lesbians are seen as sexy etc, especially as men predominantly watch football

It’s great to see United so supportive of Cavallo too - Ross Aloisi and Djite had some really nice comments today.

Our league may be a bit shambolic sometimes, but things like this make you proud of it.

Glad he felt like he’s in a comfortable enough environment to share something like that and good to see the club being so supportive. Its so important to people to see something like this and hopefully there are people in the closet who see this and feel more accepted and football seems more accepting for them.

But it does take a lot to do something like this. Hopefully not just Adelaide but the whole league is supportive.

Basically every club has tweeted about it which is great to see

For now it has been hugely positive, he’s had lovely retweets from people.like Pique and Griezmann, and basically all the big clubs. It’s when all that settles down and the day to day resumes and the knuckle staggers come out which will be tough.
I’m hopeful that with so many standing with him he can be allowed to have whatever career his ability merits as a footballer rather than having this put so much pressure on him that he can’t cope with it all.
Either way what his done will make it easier for the next one and the next one and so on so what he’s done has been huge.

Yeah I imagine that western Sydney will be great when Adelaide play there.

I’m firmly in the ‘whatever’ camp - couldn’t care less what anyone’s sexual orientation is. If anything, I feel making a song and dance about it only invites the trolls to come out of hibernation.

You’re obviously not a young homosexual man - or just a homosexual man. It’s extremely helpful to people like that, not just for other pro sports people to see its OK and accepted but just normal guys who happen to play sport with ‘the guys’ etc and feel like they can come out / be ‘themselves’ to them.

In short: dumb opinion

Couldn’t disagree more. Representation matters - and seeing Cavallo make this announcement and the overwhelming support he’s receiving, normalises this and means in years to come it won’t be such a big deal.

Great to see some of the legends supporting Josh - Rashford, Ibra, Pique, Ferdinand, Varane and the biggest clubs in the world tweeting him. Great stuff and I’m surprised how big the news has become.

Yeah it matters, I can’t imagine if my boys who all love football were gay and thought that they couldn’t be themselves or that they weren’t allowed to play.

Especially when you see some things said and done by other clubs supporters.

That’s the attitude that everyone should have in an ideal world. That’s definitely the goal.

The problem is that so many people don’t feel that way about other people’s sexual orientations. That’s why for now, unfortunately, we need the public figures to do this. If it normalises homosexuality in a few more people’s minds, helps a few more kids feel comfortable and confident to be themselves without getting bullied, abused, or worse for it, then it’s very worthwhile.

The end goal is a world of people who don’t care less. That’s what all this is for.

The more we celebrate this hopefully the more comfortable other players in the same position will feel. At some point soon it will be a complete non issue but when he is so unique (the only 1 or 1 of very few active pros who are open about it) we clearly have a huge problem and there are 100s of gay players throughout the world who are struggling with this.
