Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Zdrilić: The Ufuk Talay Thread

Talay out the mob has spoken

He’s had a far inferior squad to the ones that the coaches I compared him to had.

Give him our players and the resources our club have and I’d be very confident that he’d improve his record.

As for the way he looks, at least he doesn’t look more and more like Barnaby Joyce as the game goes on.

A top 4 finish in the league should be the absolute bare minimum for this club every season. There should be dire consequences for those responsible any year that at the very least isn’t achieved. The resources this club has, it should never ever be acceptable to finish outside the top 4. It should be unthinkable.

He might get the youth players performing but I don’t see him taking us to the next level in terms of results. I think we’d also retain a lot of the problems that Talay provides already, such as his teams struggling to step up in the big games, some inconsistent performances, and his teams struggling to hold leads historically.

You could very well be right but I doubt we’ll ever get the chance to find out as I don’t think him coming here would eventuate.

I do think he’s earned a shot with a bigger club though.

Id suggest in a salary capped league aiming for the top permanently is almost impossible. That’s literally the whole point. In fact it feels like the biggest issue we’ve had is rhe number of homegrown player departures we had post Arnold and Corica that would have hit the cap hard

We had the good fortune of having Brosque and Simon at minimum wage, the likes of Grant and Ryall with a big loyalty allowance, and probably others that I can’t remember right now. We’re unlikely to have that level of benefits back in a hurry.

No your just letting them off with an easy weak excuse, compared to almost the entire league, with the resources, technical and recruitment knowhow this club has at its disposal, it should easily be able to wheel out a squad every year that should comfortably make the top 4. Salary capped league or not.

Isn’t this exactly what was said about Talay at the Nux? Plus he was such a master at recruitment, imagine what he can do with our resources, etc.

We could make the exact same arguments about throwing cash at the Mariners for Jackson, imagine what he’ll do with better resources etc. But at least he’s actually won things. And has a PPG up there with the best.

If I had to choose a non-Arnie option currently in the league, which ideally we don’t do, it’s probably John Aloisi. Western have a stupidly inexperienced squad and he’s getting a lot out of them and seems to recruit pretty well given he’s having to sell players on living in the middle of nowhere.

Don’t think Talay is at risk of being sacked midseason though, maybe if we get pantsed by Bangkok.

It’s funny how every single suggested Aussie coach in this thread, has been suggested based on the fact that they have less resources and are managing to get the most out of the team. Exact same thing that was discussed about Talay…

Veart and Aloisi have also had recent shit seasons where their squads underperformed.

At least Aloisi has won the league, but I agree that I don’t think he’s it. Kinda the opposite to the “we’re a big club and we’re going to play exciting attractive football” philosophy.

The whole idea of “attractive football” is pretty hard to pin down. If we won games 2-0 every week with 75% possession we’d probably call it boring. Right now it’s not like we’re really on the “attractive football” thing either. There’s sparks of it, but not enough under any coach we’ve had really.

The high press that was working for us at the start of the season and end of last season was actually quite nice to watch. Heavy urgency and showed a bit of passion. Helped that our passing was spot on as well

Yeah. It’s also very subjective. Arnies football at times was pretty grindy and wasn’t what I would call the best to watch. But it was coherent, winning football and wasn’t just a constantly low block or the like.

Well there is an Aussie manager whos previously succeeded at a big club and won numerous trophies. Hes having another great season this year so far…

I remember Lavicka fondly and he was a terrorist. Left wing McFlynn should have led to jail time.

And yet, we won the double.

I’d take 15 1-0 wins a season
