Hello Boys! - The Paris 2024 Olympics thread

oh, fuck. The right wing hanson supporter in my high school group chat has asked not to be started on transgender issues as he can’t explain transgender to his kids.

Strayas favourite air.

Diabolical performance from the Boomers so far. Missed free throws, missed lay ups, a shitload of turnovers and terrible shot selection is killing them.

It looks like we are through if Canada beats Spain but we are out if Spain win. Random draw for the quarters (but top two overall are seeded and we can’t play Canada or Greece/Spain).

Second quarter meltdown and a lack of composure late in the fourth really hurt.

3 more gold overnight, back to 3rd overall.

Which got me wondering how Australia is tracking at this point of the games relative to previous years?

Tried and failed to get ChatGPT to produce a chart showing Aussie gold medal tally, by competition day, by Olympic year.

Assuming that after the swimming concludes our medal chances drop significantly, anyone have any idea whether 11 gold at the halfway point is better or worse than, say, this point in time in Tokyo?

As far as I can see, we are a little bit ahead in Paris.

In Tokyo we were on 9 golds after the first 7 days. Then we had the incredible day of 4 golds in one day on 9th day. After that it did trail off and we bombed a few possibilities where we probably should have picked up one or two more. After the gold rush day, we picked up 3 more but they were spread out over the next 7 days.

We finished Tokyo equal best ever with Athens 2004 on 17 golds. I’m not sure we can get to that mark here but I would like to think we will give it a red hot go.

Also we should really be on 12 if you count Kyle Chalmers coming first

Who knows, we might get that somewhere down the line.

I’m still holding onto the dream that Mariya Lasitskene gets retroactively pinged and Nicola McDermott gets upgraded to high jump gold from Tokyo!

Cam McEvoy winning the 50m free gold is likely to be a big turning point in swim training regimes. 30 years old, 4th Olympics, 1st Gold. The average age for the Gold medal winner in the 50m free is about 24.

Historically, its all been about distance swum in the pool. Every coach up until recently has pushed the need for more sessions in the pool and more laps. McEvoy took a different approach over the last couple of years, reducing his time in the pool and focusing on more strength, conditioning and flexibility out of the pool.

My sons swim coach subscribes to this new approach to elite training and its how Harry has been training for the last 6-9 months. Nice to see it pay off.

Particularly baffling when you have 5v5 basketball…

Why don’t Lebron, Curry and JT play 3 v 3… they could win that and then let the rest of the USA team win the 5 player gold

Unfortunately, there are some within the Chinese swim team that have ruined the reputation for the rest of the team for the next little bit, so theres going to be those insinuations for a while I feel.

Which is a shame, because the guy who won the 100m free swam an incredible race and deserves to be congratulated for his efforts.

I had a thought, why can’t they compete in both?

State sponsored sports doping by Communist countries was a thing during- and post- Cold War. Not saying it didn’t happen anywhere else but Olympics seemed to be rife with it. I guess it’s stuck.
