Malaysia, Bust or Busted? - The A-League where are they now thread

This.

Is it really that dissimilar to a ‘Guest’ spot the A-League had/has?

They were signed and registered for a minimum period of time though, which is slightly different. They’re using up a registered spot, this would be the equivalent of us having to 100% win our last group stage game to qualify for knockout, signing Messi for that one game and letting him go.

Again different situation. Guest spot needs to be approved by the A-League before they’re in. They’re meant to be there to boost the League’s exposure and can’t be there just to boost performance on the field. A one game guest stint at a pivotal time for a team would more than likely be vetoed

Well FWIW, there’s still a chance he’ll sign for Paro for the end of the Bhutan national league season, or the Challange League group stage.

We signed players from other clubs on loan to use in the champions league with no intention of signing them beyond that - in Durantes and Williams case - they were loaned to us for just the champions league -

Like the Williams deal, Durante will return to the Phoenix once he fulfils his commitments with Sydney FC

I personally see no difference.

Back then the A-League completely finished (in February) before the ACL started (March to May).

The players were never registered for us in the league, so I don’t know that there were any cap implications at all?

Oh, and I think early A-League squad sizes were capped at 20 while the ACL required a squad of 23, so we had to loan players to fill out the numbers.

Connor Metcalfe gets an extension at St Pauli. Not sure how long it goes but he was originally contracted to 2025, so it will be at least 2026.
Whenever an Australian player does well enough at a club to not just be let go is a pretty significant achievement, particularly at what is now a top flight club in the Big 5 leagues. Very few manage it, and we have two players there who have done this.

Ross County sign Nisbett and another Aussie is in Scotland

Metcalfe does need to start backing up his club form for the Socceroos, though. He’s been poor at international level so far.

Perhaps with all the Aussies in Scotland, we can make a National Second Division.

They were signed for the whole campaign, not just to ensure qualification for a one off game. Honda will more than likely not compete in the competition. As another example, it would be like signing a major name just for the Grand Final

Ohhhh the FA has been talking about a National Scottish Division this whole time…
