Round 3 - City vs Sydney FC - 3/11/23

McClaren barely touched a ball outside of kick off and missed penalty last week. So im predicting him to score 2 and the commentators to carp on again about how he only needs one chance! to score

King is back. Rodwell is still out

King in is massive. He’s nowhere near perfect, but we all know how badly JCP has been found and how often in the first two games. I’d like to see how JCP goes at CB before we write him off completely.

He was highly rated when he left Brisbane. I’d like to see him with a stable CB pairing too. Girdwood-Reich and Lacerda are both good players individually but we’ve got one CB whos learning the position and at the start of his career and another whos really new to the league.

Arnold’s Sydney FC came 7th in his second season here… The whole culture behind Sydney FC is that they don’t just fire staff whenever they start to underperform, the club allows people to try and fix their mistakes. Otherwise you end up with a revolving door of coaches that don’t perform within the first few months of their tenure.

Also the preceding 3 years in which SFC came 8th, Corica won 2 Grand Finals and a Premiers Plate. The year right before the 8th spot, we came second and missed out on the Grand Final due to a Brattan brain fart with a straight red. I mean seriously…

Indeed theres a fine line between ā€œruthlessā€ and ā€œreactionaryā€

I wouldn’t, but only because as a lefty it means something will have gone awry with Lacerda for him to get a run there.

Lavicka also was allowed to try to right the ship after his second season ended out of finals places. Almost a decade now of sticking with managers (including when the fans were absolutely begging for Farina to be hung, drawn, and quartered).

I reckon you got to give a coach 5 games. Corica won’t be happy. I expect we’ll see a bit of a shakeup tomorrow. I mean, he has to do something, right?

With that in mind its time for the easiest part of any coaches job, the cut. Now, while I wasn’t able to cut everyone I wanted to - I say, after a start like we’ve had - if there was ever a time to be ruthless, its now.

Redmayne - I think his performances have been unacceptable. He has to be dropped for the sake of maintaining standards in the first XI. I actually think we can start to chart a bit of a trajectory for Redmayne over the last year or two and I think its not favorable for him… Corica won’t though.

JCP - King comes back in, so he can have a sit on the bench for a bit.

Burgess - we have to address this midfield and I think the best way to do it is to return to what worked in preseason and bring Hollman straight back in to the starting lineup. (honestly, we don’t have a lot of other options with Rodwell out). Burgess can come on at 60 or so and do a madness then.

Fabio - I never thought bringing him straight in to the XI was wise. We had a great chance to bed him. We should have taken it. Bring him on once Wood had run them a bit ragged. Wood should be starting at least for now.

Hollman was dragged at half time in his last 2 matches. It was after he was replaced that the performance improved.

The answer to the midfield issue is to move JGR there to do the defensive heavy lifting for Bratten. Caceres and Burgess then fight it out for the #10 role.

Lacerda is a right footed CB. Not sure why we can’t move him over to RCB and play JCP as the LCB.

I honestly think Brattan should be benched for a game.

Definitely not the same player since his last injury. The distribution is still there but the mobility is gone. He doesn’t have the speed or engine to be able to get through a game as the sole #6.
I’d put JGR in there with him before I’d bench him but he’d better show some improvement pretty quickly.

With Rodwell-Lacerda do we need the passing range from midfield?

Cannot wait to have my weekend ruined on a Friday night again.

Not sure that JGR has the passing range and with us playing with a #10 you need someone in there that can distribute otherwise we could very quickly end up having no option other than to knock it long.

We also need Rodwell to be fit. I can’t imagine him stepping up into midfield too often until he’s got a couple of games under his belt.

Yeah very tempting, but - as captain i reckon it is a bit on him to fix this shit.

He has to go out there and start winning us some games.

Agreed with all that but I honestly thought Lacerda was a lefty (from his highlight reel anyways, the last 2 games have been too painful elsewhere to notice).

That expectation can be the problem. He can try too hard to make a difference sometimes. The red card in the 21 GF was a case in point, where he was trying to drag a very feeble looking team back into it.
The mistake in R1 was another where from Cove Heights, we had the perfect view of him in comfortable possession, having free men running forward to his outside, only to ignore them, turn back inside and into trouble, maybe looking for something more flashy.
He could do with sitting more and being given a fit and mobile partner who can do more of the running.

JGR is playing centre half.

But we could play a centre half at centre half
