Do you actually believe this is why they invaded Ukraine?
Do you actually believe this is why they invaded Ukraine?
Amongst other things obviously. Russia has been terrified about the enlargement of NATO for a while now.
Really?? Russia invaded Ukraine purely because they want the resources, land and to rebuild the Soviet Union. If the NATO story had ANY credence, then he should have invaded Finland and Sweden when they first approached NATO to join the alliance. Russia doesn’t give a shit about NATO apart from the fact that they use them as a boogey man to keep their partners and citizens under wrap. To them, the Cold War never ended
Like any other invasion really. If they’ve been talking about NATO for about a decade at least then someone is thinking about it. Leaders have been inventing boogey men for invasions for a while now. That is theirs. A reason, a pretext, a lie, a propaganda tool, there is nothing original about it.
Either way, in the context of negotiation, Russia will not accept Ukraine in NATO. Everyone knows that.
I thought it was to liberate Ukraine from their nazi leaders?
fixed that for you
The NATO talk was pretty much in the leadup to the invasion and nothing else. When they had Russian puppets controlling Ukraine, there was never any discussions about Russia not wanting Ukraine to join NATO. I do see what you’re saying, but stating that it had anything to do with NATO is just repeating Russian propaganda.
In terms of your other points, Russia is really bleeding HARD at the moment. North Korean troops were shifted away from the front in Kursk due to heavy losses. Russian troops went in and Ukraine used that moment to attack on a new axis. Russia was forced to bring back th NK troops to block the holes. Considering that he’s avoiding conscription like absolutely crazy, there’s got to be a point where they just don’t have the men.
Confirmed tank losses by Russia indicate 3700 gone. That’s reported by Oryx that reportedly only counts a tank that they can geolocate footage or photos of. If that’s a confirmed total, that’s a bit over half of Russia’s tanks gone. That’s not taking into account the fact that a portion of those in storage are going to be mothballed. There’s even plenty of verified footage of Russian commanders forcing troops on crutches into attacks, purely because they don’t have the reserves. I mean I can see the logic of using them in defensive positions, but definitely not for attack
Are they calling it the D3?
The Ruskies have flown a drone into the Chernobyl shell covering the reactor.
The world holds its breath, as we await HBOs Chernobyl sequel.
I’m surprised Trump hasn’t told us how it’s better to burn Chernobyl to get rid of the radiation.
Bit concerning all round.
There is a story in the New York Times regarding Ukraine rejecting a USA offer of 50% of all profits on minerals within Ukraine going to the USA because there was no guarantee of security for Ukraine.
In the past few days a number of people have criticised Trump for giving away land and NATO membership before meeting with the Russians to negotiate a peace deal saying it was a poor negotiating strategy but I am wondering if Trump is really negotiating with Putin or is he trying to force Ukraine to accept a deal that has already been negotiated.
Last fall, work was underway to finalize and sign an agreement with the Biden administration to cooperate on extracting and processing minerals. But Ukrainian authorities decided to postpone the signing of the deal and offer it to Mr. Trump instead so that he could claim credit for it.
Just like Biden’s border deals with Canada and Mexico then.
I’d heard they wanted 50% of the minerals, not 50% of the profits. Either way, they apparently have to Ukraine to sign without telling them they wanted to sign on the day. The knew about the deal, but definitely not about the timelines. Ukraine said no and there’s definitely suggestions that the deal was VERY open ended and had absolutely no security arrangements for Ukraine in the slightest.
The US has indicated though, that Ukraine will be given a seat at the negotiating table. It’s still left to be confirmed whether the US just wants them to watch, or will actually allow them to speak though. Going by the latest rhetoric from the USA, they may be hoping that Ukraine will do nothing at the talks. The irony is that the US is apparently negotiating, but they’ve already said it’ll be up to Europe to ensure Ukraine’s security. The same Europe that has been banned from the peace negotiations. Either way, I can’t see this going too far.
On the “plus” side for Ukraine, the rumoured next Chancellor of Germany is very hawkish towards Russia. He’s already said he’ll supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles and will up their supply of weaponry in general. Something the current German government has been hesitant in doing so.
Apart from that, sort of same old on the front. Ukraine launched a counter-attach in Pokrovsk, managing to re-take a town to the south. They’re still very steady in Kursk and are on plan to modernise their army structure. They did also detain a very senior intelligence official as a Russian spy. He was working in anti-terror as a Senior Official.
Starmer just stated he’d be willing to station UK troops in Ukraine to guarantee the peace process
Gongs for the boys
I wouldnt mind another one.
What’s the right of passage into the Black Sea like?
It’s been awhile, but I think the Turks got upset with us the one time I know of us trying.
So US/Russia peace talks are due to commence in Saudi Arabia. After all the talk of Ukraine being involved in the process, they didn’t tell Ukraine they were happening. Fucking hell… imagine negotiating a peace on the behalf of a country and not include the aggrieved country in the slightest.
At this stage, i’m assuming the Trump peace will essentially involve:
Probably their excuse to cut off any funding/support for Ukraine. Talk to Russia and get an agreement that is unacceptable to Ukraine. Ukraine refuse it and they say “Well we tried they’re unreasonable”. Cut funding.
