State Politics Thread (non NSW)

Fuck, the ROI on that business case surely doesn’t stack up.

Sounds like someone took someone else to lunch that was nicer than the original someone.

That good old youth crime epidemic sweeping the nation… started up in QLD from memory…

Amazing that the statistics never seemed to show any major spike. We just never fucking learn do we?

In a one paper town, if the statistics dont tell the story the paper wants, then they’ll have lurid stories. If the government ignores it they will say they’re out of touch and be told “tell that to the victims of [insert horrific crime].”

It’s a shit game and it’s fucking awful, but as long as we’ve got a fucked media environment we’re kinda stuck with it.

How did the Queensland Premier suppose these state owned petrol stations will work?

Where are they going to source the petrol from?

I can’t see the oil companies handing over their product so that they can be undercut by a Government backed entity.

There will be a new government within a week if any form of nationalisation is attempted.

there is going to be a new government in Qld later this year… this is the last desperate attempt to hold onto power

The Lithgow Mercury was particularly hilarious, especially if anyone said anything non-complimentary about mining.

There’s something delightfully ironic about a mountain mining town having its local paper called ‘The Mercury’.

Named after the towns drinking water?

My wife watches today, and they did a story about seatbelts on school buses and how there’s a campaign to get all buses in Qld retrofitted.

Sounds good. But the government is being slow about getting it done.
They then showed an interview with a government minister who was asked if he would be happy with his kids taking a bus to school that didnt have seatbelts.
He refused to answer the question, started a talking point about “safety is our number 1 priority” etc

It encapsulated everything wrong with politicians on an issue that should be so easy to solve.
The sceptic in me says the private school he sends his kids to has got seatbelts.

That’s just the endemic shitty Australian journalism where for decades politicians have been allowed to non-answer questions without consequence. Journos are so terrified of even mildly holding those fucks to account that they get away with absolute nonsense responses.

The correct response is “Sorry Minister, could you please answer the question, would you be happy to have your child ride a bus with no seatbelts?” rinse and repeat till you get an actual answer or end the interview because they’re refusing to answer the question. These cunts are public servants and need to be held accountable.

The clip they showed the journalist tried but he just kept going like a robot.

In which case they should have every journalist ask him that exact same question at the start of every interview until he answers it. Don’t give him a chance to spout other shit, or push his own policy agendas until he answers that first question. If they want to be treated like kids, they should be treated like kids.

Then they cut the mic, these bastards eed accountability

Cutting the mic also gives the politicians what they want. Most don’t seem to want accountability when something goes wrong and they’re responsible for it.

But they need a platform for their bullshit.

The problem is that the journalists don’t actually care about the other question ( or the journalist) They care about the question they are going to ask, and getting the talking point for their article or news snippet.

They also know the MP will only take a limited amount of questions before it ends and probably cut it short the moment they are pressed on anything. It’s all a performance from both sides that benefits nobody.

I watched 730 the other night and there was a classic example of it where Bridget McKenzie refused to answer if the government should legislate for the power to break up Qantas. Wanted to say Labour should be doing it while dodging if it was Coalition policy. Ferguson picking around the edges but never nailing her to a straight answer. Reminded my why I don’t watch the fucking show. Infuriating from both of them
