Scott McLaughlin deserves success for taking a risk and going overseas when he could’ve stayed in Australia and remained a big fish in a little pond like Jamie Whingecup was.

Kids these days …
Fastest ever pole speed as well. Has been on rails all week.
Bump day is still the most horrible thing in Motorsport.
I think when you’re lucky enough to be signed by a team part owned by Penske who comes and watches when he can and then offers you a seat in one of the top two teams in Indycar then you’d be mad not to take it.
I don’t know if Whingecup ever had a chance to go overseas but I’m sure temperament is looked at.
Max Verstappen was competing in the online version of 24 Hours of Spa (?) all weekend.
He was competing in 2 races at the same time so much more impressive than watching 2 guys punch each other for an hour.
I think I read he did two stints?
Not sure. I just heard it in his pre race interview.
He was asked how much sleep he had managed to get which I thought was a weird line of questioning. It wasn’t until they cut back to the commentary team that they said that he was doing the online race giving context to the question asked.
On’ drivers doing double duties in one day, there is a guy who is doing both the Indy 500 and the Coca Cola 600 this Sunday.
Max and Lando both said they were up to 2am watching golf and boxing.
It’s probably Kyle Larson doing bother races. He’s qualified in 5th place for the 500. He’s been a dirt track and stock car champ, trying his hand at oval open wheel racing and debuting in the fucking Indy 500.
I think it;s his debut. i may be wrong.
Yeah I think that’s the guy.
If he completes the full race distance in both races he will have driven the equivalent of halfway to Perth from Sydney.
Correct, and he also left Indy qualifying as soon as it finished and went straight to the NASCAR all star race (which they delayed the start of due to him running late!)
I’ve said it before in this forum but this deification of Senna is getting a bit out of hand. In Monaco this weekend, half the grid has tribute helmets and McLaren are running a tribute livery. Most of the drivers weren’t even alive when he was killed.
Senna was complex guy. Undeniably talented but kinda weird. He was a Christian who did a lot of great things but dated underage girls and his manic intensity led him to do a few shitty things on the track. The Senna documentary has to take some of blame here as well. Wildly popular, it glossed over his flaws and its portrayal of Prost was pretty reprehensible. I guess I’m old enough to have lived through his era and my memory is long…
As a kid, I thought Senna was fucking crazy, to be honest, especially after the “God will show me the way” headline. I have a great respect for him these days as a driver, though, as he was the greatest driver, and the greatest talent, in the greatest generation of F1 drivers ever. He did some good things off the track but also some pretty bad things. Admittedly, the whole thing about him dating a 15 year old while he was 25 is something I’ve only just found out about. Absolutely crazy.
I do agree that the dedication to Senna is going too far. I don’t remember Jim Clark getting any fanfare in 1998 when it was 30 years since his death, and I’d consider myself to have a good memory on things like that.
I was a huge Senna fan, but I agree it’s all abit OTT.
But this is also part of a general trend to spend all your time honouring the past and thanking people for their service to the military industrial complex and just plain fucking cultism.
I still remember Michele Alboreto. Killed testing Audi R8’s in Germany.
Well that took an interesting turn.
I also remember Alboreto. I also remember Stefan Bellof who was killed at Spa in an endurance car in 1985. Elio De Angelis, a trained concert pianist, killed testing the Brabham BT55 “skateboard”. Ricardo Paletti, killed at the start of the 1982 Canadian Grand Prix in an Osella.
All these names somehow lost in time.
Danny Hulme on Conrod Straight.
Cultism. Mythism. Sports have myths. The roll Johnny Warren fills in Australian soccer is that of the myth.
The over celebration comes from the same place as US discounts for veterans and thanking them for their service. You can’t opt out. It’s where one goes we all go one.
At this point, what function does this celebration of Senna fulfil? I mean, the paint scheme on the Mclaren looks pretty farken sick, but that’s Mclaren. There’s a strong tie there. Someone at Mclaren may even know someone that was at McLaren in 1992!
F2 doing its thing in Monaco as usual. Track is blocked at Rascasse now as well. Possibly red flag.
Perez out in Q1. Alonso, too. Oh dear.
Leclerc pole. Piastri P2. Verstappen P6 and doesn’t look comfortable at all.
Awesome for Oscar.
