With Oscar Leclerc in P2 is this the first father/son front row in F1 history?

That F2 race was amazing, and with a shocking conclusion. Gotta feel for Hadjar. He absolutely didn’t deserve to get done like that.

Fucking hell. Magnussen is a fucking useless cunt. Huge shunt for Perez. Thank goodness he’s okay and also thank goodness they were at the back of the field.

Magnussen is on 10 penalty points, too. Surely a race ban is coming up for him.

And it looks like Oscar was all over Charles and Sainz was out giving Norris 3rd.

Different story on restart.

Maybe Monaco could become a TT. That could possibly make it interesting?

I’m glad I went to bed after about 10 laps. It threatened to not really be motor racing when they were pottering around many seconds slower than their usual pace, just to avoid making a pitstop. After a certain point, surely that was counter-intuitive. Really poor “spectacle”.

Even worse that Magnussen didn’t get any sanction for punting Perez into the wall at 250kph and causing one of the biggest accidents over the last couple of years. All in all, not a good day for F1’s image.

I did likewise… watched the the initial start, was baffled by the penalties for the various accidents (at least Ocons is now a grid penalty at the next race - although what Alpine must think is the big question)

As soon as the second start became a procession, i went and got some sleep

Next time on Drive to Survive.

In comparison to Monaco, this is 20 minutes of exciting highlights.

Am I the only one who wouldn’t be too upset if Monaco was removed from the calendar? F1 cars outgrew the circuit 50 years ago. Really the only open-wheeler cars that are probably slow enough and narrow enough to make the track action kind of interesting are Formula E. Even F2 and F3 cars have a lot of trouble overtaking there, especially if someone is defending.

Maybe Monaco will stay because its one of those races that the rich and famous still turn up for. But more often than not, Monaco races are really processional, especially in F1.

I think F1 cars are too big for most circuits and pretty much all the street circuits.

Replace Monaco with full course Hokenheim.

F1 cars have outgrown the track but I don’t think even downsizing the cars would ever make Monaco a viable race track for just about any category.
I can’t see F1 binning it because although it doesn’t bring in a truck load of cash (bringing in more now than ever though) it is the one race that the people that bring the money to the sport want to attend.

I think Hilly was on to something a couple of posts ago whereby they could turn it into a variation of a time trial race.

The format that comes to mind is to run FP1, FP2 and have the full quali session as per normal.
For the “race” I’d start the drivers 15 seconds apart in groups of 4 starting from P20 and working your way up. Each group would run for 10 laps and at the conclusion of those runs the driver in P1 gets to choose what order the groups of 4 start their second session of the 10 lap, 4 car format.
Combine the 2 session times and you get your winnner.

You’re right about the race being processional these days, but I for one would be sad to see it completely gone from the calendar (not that I think it ever would).

Some of my childhood memories are from the early 80s, staying up past my bedtime with dad watching the F1 on a Sunday night, with Murray Walkers voice and the distinctive Lowes hairpin.

I’ve walked most of the circuit including the tunnel (fun fact: technically the longest ‘corner’ of any current or past F1 track). The weird pit lane & podium. That low apartment balcony overhanging the hairpin. The onboard shots through Tabac and Piscine. Rasscasse. The bump in the road through Casino Square.

It’s all about the nostalgia rather than the actual racing for me.

Agreed… brilliant track to walk around… the vertical distance on the track is massive.

While it’s already got the softest tyre choices, we saw this weekend the degredation is pretty minimal - and that’s using C3, C4, C5 - the softest choices amongst the five.

While artificial, I’d almost like to see them require two pitstops per each Monaco race, at least that would introduce some jeopardy and possibly different strategies.

As it was a brilliantly managed race by Ferrari.

Is formula 1 in the sports nostalgia business?

Or the sports entertainment business?

The Monaco Festival of Speed sounds like a better bet than a Grand Prix with cars that don’t work on that track.

Make it a Formula Ford race.

I’d say Historic Monaco needs to be made a bigger thing. It gives some of the newer audience another chance to appreciate older machinery. As long as it doesn’t lose the organisers too much money, I think this would be the best way to go. And we can appreciate the outdated Monaco circuit at the same time.

As usual, it will probably take another death at the race track for FIA to abandon the circuit entirely.

Easiest way to fix Monaco, put them all in go karts, you qualify in your f1 car but race day is go karts now go nuts

And they can shoot multi-coloured shells at each other.

They’ll certainly all need some power-ups to get up Beau Rivage!
