Western United Thread

It makes sense that theyre announcing the younger signings now. These guys have less to lose in terms of starting spots by being announced but still shows theyre moving on good young players who hopefully now move up the pecking order at Western at get more minutes. Theyve supposedly got over a dozen players signed but some of those more experienced ones are only getting announced end of season. So far though:

???
Risdon-Aspro-Calver-???
Chapman-Kone
Pieras-Pasquali-???
Stamatelopoulos

Their first game might be a friendly against Leeds

Given how hard NWSW were finding it to sell tickets, this would surely be even harder.

Redkat - Connor Pain off to WU as well

Source? I’m surprised by this. I thought the new ground plus seeing a middle aged Argentinian man sitting on a blue esky would be enough to get everyone excited about the game. Are tickets expensive?

I’m going based off this and the ensuing discussion:

weren’t they top of the league and expected to get automatic promotion when the idea was first organised?

Just had a look and it looks like the Leeds allocations at least have sold out so it’s more down to Wests. And there are tickets available at $25 so it’s not extortionate.

Pasquali was playing CB at Ajax lately. Interesting to see what he’ll be here. (and under Arnie)

Valentino Yuel becomes their first signing right from the NPL

Watched Bentleigh on Saturday night. He is a good player and could step up to HAL bench level. Pacey, strong and a weapon on the break.

Marco Jankovic 100% is HAL level today, not just cos of his name. Very very good defender. Really impressed and its obvious why he looks the goods. 'Why aren’t I good enough?’: Bentleigh’s FFA Cup hero reveals how his moment finally arrived | FFA Cup

Georgievski has also signed, so there’s a full team already, apart from choosing a goalkeeper.

Valentino Yuel sounds like a speedy attacking player that can run at defenders, a bit like Elvis Kamsoba.

Agree that Jankovic is a pretty classy player and the fact he isn’t playing at HAL level yet is exactly why we need more teams, so guys like him can get a serious opportunity of good game time. There just isn’t the squad spots in this league for all of them and its absolutely killing us at national level, particularly at youth level where many Asian nations have either caught us, or overtaken us.

In pretty sure they said Georgievski went to Wanderers in the end

Gotcha. Just saw the article for it.

Desperately want to avoid stereotyping but Yuel is a lot like Kamau (decent Adelaide version). Hard when you’ve only seen him against an mid table NPL defence but coming on for Pain at the 75th minute he can do a job. Looks like CCM have given the most options to NPL players but because they are so shit it makes it hard for those lads to stand out.

Millar has done just fine with CCM this season but he surely found out soon enough how haphazard the club is at the moment and he is better served going elsewhere. Even as early as December, it was clear he had done more than enough to warrant a contract extension, and especially someone who is just making their way in professional football, has to make the most of a good run and get the best deal for themselves. CCM were extremely naive not to have him tied down earlier than they did. But we’ve been had the same discussion on this forum a hundred times about CCM, nothing more needs to be said.

Signed Josh Cavallo from City. Supposedly a double announcement tomorrow.

With 12 players supposedly signed

Kurto
Risdon Calver Aspro Pierias
Chapman-Kone
Pain-Pasquali-Yuel
Stamatelopoulos

Bench: Cavallo

With 3 visa spots to go youd be thinking probably a CB, LB and CF. That would get them up to 15 players and a backup keeper and its 16. Imagine then those last 6-7 would be a few NPL players and a few other a-league squaddie types.

Kurto, Calver, Chapman, Kone and Pasquali would be ok signings for us but it’s pretty meh overall. Hope their unannounced signings are decent. Good for the league if they do well.
